Blog about Gastric Health in horses

Gastric Health:

Horses are designed to be continuously grazing, with at least a small amount of forage always in the stomach. As a result the equine stomach secretes a large amount of acid (HCL) daily, up to 16 gallons per day. The stomach has several protective mechanisms in place to naturally prevent gastric ulcer formation, but diet, exercise, stress, and certain medications can undermine the stomach’s ability to protect itself and result in gastric ulcers. Being mindful of these predisposing factors is always important, and keeping a healthy pH during will help your horse to be as comfortable as possible during exercise. Magnesium oxide and calcium carbonate are the 2 main ingredients in Funky Unicorn’s new Antacid chew. These two components work quickly to raise the pH of the stomach (make the stomach less acidic) and therefore increase the comfort of your horse prior to exercise. Increasing your horse’s comfort will create a more willing and happy experience during training. Try them on your horse today, and see the difference you didn’t know you were missing!
